Abert's Squirrels are famous for their tufty ears. The other day when I was hiking in New Mexico, I saw this squirrel. White and black tail, brown back, white abdomen and long, rabbit-looking ears surely are the features of an Abert's Squirrel. However, the tufts are missing.
I don;t think it's a juvenile given most squirrels are born during June and July and do not reach mature size until week 16.
So why does it have no tufts? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
