He's probably not hungry, leave the food out and wait until he eats it.
it's an american dagger moth caterpillar. i put leaves from red maple, birch, maple, poplar, and a few trees in my yard i don't know the name of into the jar. he's just been crawling around for an hour and not eating. he's about 2 inches.
