Why does olive oil kill cockroaches?

Cockroaches breed in septic tanks and places where they can congregate such as drains and under fitted furniture and where kitchen waste is present.

Our apartment is tiny and clean, yet around this time of the year we get a lot of tiny cockroaches, especially in the kitchen. Our assumption/guess is that they come from our neighbour's apartment, but they don't really social so there's not much we can do about that.

Two years ago I got this crazy idea of trapping them in petroleum but we obviously didn't have any, so I decided to use cooking oil. But we didn't have any other oil than olive oil. So I poured some (very little) olive oil on a part of the ground of the kitchen, and when I came back home that evening it had dead cockroaches in it. I cleaned that up, and poured the corn oil I'd bought, but it didn't trap/kill any (at least not right there).

Hence this has become my way of setting small traps: using olive oil.

But why is this?

I mean olive oil is quite a healthy oil.
