That's a good question. Ignore smart alec answers. It sure would make everything a lot easier.
They communicate by body language and pheromones, which evolved independently. Sometimes, there is overlap, as when both lizards and cats try to make themselves look larger to deter attack. Sometimes, there is miscommunication. when a dog is happy to see you, he wags his tail (that isn't the end that bites, though). When a cat lashes his tail from side to side, he is royally pissed off.
