Why do seagulls go to the same area to roost at night?

he area may be where their nests are and/or a place where they know they'll be safe from most predators

I noticed a few minutes ago that all the seagulls in my town are flying toward the same spot...do they need to protect themselves from predators or something? Because this is the only time I have EVER seen them stick together in geese-like flocks, V-shape and all.
