Why do my ferrets steal my shoes?

Ferrets are known to steal things and hide them. It's just their behavior. My ferret stole my stuffed animals and hid them all the time. To prevent this, I put up a play pen so I can always keep an eye on him.

Sometimes you just have to lock things away from inquisitive and playful animals. I had a kitten (who grew into a cat) who loved gloves, and would always steal them, then play with them until they were ripped to shreds.

Yes. Their wild cousins such as weasels and the mink hoard food in the wild. Weasels will kill more mice and rats than they can eat and stuff them inside their tunnels.

My ferrets constantly steal my shoes and flip flops and hide them randomly around my house and I'm wondering exactly why all ferrets are notorious for stealing random things. Do they store their food in the wild? Aren't ferrets domesticated. Why would tht trait of stealing still be passed down?
