Why are zebras called referees?

The black and white striped coloration is conspicuous out in the open, but it is camouflage in tall grass and short bushes because there are often patches of sunlight interspersed with patches of shaded ground in these types of habitats. To take advantage of the conspicuous nature of these colors, many referees are outfitted with black and white shirts since practically all sports are played on an open field, open court, or open ice, to make them look conspicuous. That is why referees are often called zebras.

Basketball and hockey referees wear black and white striped shirts. Enough said. :)

-Cuz They're always calling "Time Out"- on all the Other Animals- at the Zoo ?! ;)
