Why are eagles considered good and vultures bad?

Especially since eagles kill and vultures eat animals that are dead anyway?

Most people just don't like the stigma of rotting flesh. In reality, vultures and eagles are both pretty cool. The favoritism towards eagles might also have something to do with one eagle species being the national bird of a certain country (ahem... 'Merica). Eagles might also be seen as more majestic or warrior-like, and are often a rarer bird to spot than a vulture, which can be seen often on the sides of roads or in the skies.

eagles will scavenge and are not above picking the flesh of the dead.

vultures do the human race a great service, they take in diseased rotten corpses and turn it into fertiliser. more people should appreciate that.

I don't consider vultures "bad". I've studied vultures... they are magnificent gliders. Turkey Vultures have one of the best senses of smells of all birds.

You set up a straw man argument. Biologists consider all species equal. There are no such things as "good" or "bad" species.

Ridiculous human prejudice, nothing more. Many animals suffer from an undeserved bad reputation in the same way. For example, thanks to fairy-tales many people think wolves will attack people on sight, but bears are cuddly and friendly. In reality, wolves are afraid of people and avoid us whenever possible, whilst bears think nothing of killing humans.

Because eagles are beautiful and majestic, and vultures are gross and ugly.

since humans tend to personify animals, we project our own morals onto them. to us, killing is more honorable than scavenging. scavenging is as good a method of getting food as any other, but humans are used to obtaining food first hand and not surviving on scraps.

If they are then it is pure anthropomorphism.
