What the heck is this thing?!?

In tropical countries there is usually massive deluges of rain that causes a lot of flooding. The ants have evolved to have this in their instinct and so when it floods they build themselves an ant boat until they can get to dry land or a tree. Ants in europe as far I know do not do this. They can also make ant bridges to access another part of land over water. Quite amazing really that they do this on occasion. Even in their land colonies underground they can build ant towers to reach parts of the colony that they could not otherwise reach.

I haven't seen it in person. Must have been wild to see! I did watch a National Geographic show that had a bit of video on fire ants "rafting". Here's an LA Times article on how some ants use their babies to float on.

I was walking along the beach and came across some little pools of water in the sand, near giant rocks. At first, I was enjoying myself just looking at the cute little fish zooming around in the water, but then I noticed something odd.

Have you ever seen or heard of those ants that can float on water by making themselves into a kind of 'boat'? Well it was almost exactly like that but the little creatures seemed to be writhing, with no legs. They were a dark grey colour and perhaps one would say with a hint of indigo. Are these the larvae of something? I have no idea what they are.

Side note: it was a Welsh beach
