What kind of spider is hiding out in my car?

I think you're on the right track - it does sound like Phidippus audax. The number of eyes isn't all that critical - does it have two big eyes in front, and bright blue or green spots just below the eyes? It's harmless, no matter what, and if you feel uncomfortable about having it commute with you, just scoop it up with a cup and piece of paper or cardboard, and escort it outside. It will be fine.

Characteristics of the Spider:

- Slightly larger than a nickel, including legs

- Black with white stripes (stripes are mostly around the legs)

- Had a tarantula-like way about its walk

- Appeared to be a bit hairy

- Thick legs that remained fairly tight to his body as he walked

Behavior:

It walked around the inside of the windshield for a while and then eventually crawled right up to my eye level and raised its front legs. I'm not sure if it was planning to jump or if it just felt threatened.

Location:

- Northern New Jersey

- Lots of grass in the surrounding area

- Recent rain

- A pond with tall vegetation in the immediate vicininty

I looked into Bold Jumping Spiders and found out that a great way to identify them is by the number of eyes....unfortunately, I was too busy driving to really get a look at that particular characteristic.

Anyone know what this is?
