What kind of spider based on description?

For this size, it very likely is a tarantula. If all you see is the bottom of the spider, the carolina wolf spider is nearly black on its ventral side, and can get nearly as big.

This will be a harmless spider in any event, and nothing to fear or worry about.

There is only one spider you have that is considered medically significant, and that is the northern black widow. Anything else will be harmless.

Here is a typical black tarantula:

Found a spider it the laundry room of my apartment in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The spider is dead and upside down. I have arachnophobia and can not take a picture. The spider has the same body as a tarantula with the legs placed the same way and the abdomen is exactly like a tarantulas. The legs are quite thick but short and stubby-like. The entire spider is thick. The spider is hairless and has a texture that I could only describe resembling a gorillas hand. The spider is black all over from what I can see and is the size of a child's fist. I can tell you that this is definitely not even close to a black widow. It is also not a wolf spider or a female house spider. Upon first look I thought it was a tarantula. Please if you have any ideas what type of spider this is so I can learn about it and help my fears. I have a feeling this is a random spider that hitched a ride from somewhere else.
