There used to be "have a heart" brand traps - I guess they are still in business. They come in many sizes and are a box that shuts when the bait is touched. I've heard of places that rent them, too. You'll need to look around in your area. Of course then you'll have an angry badger on your hands, something I don't envy you for.
Badger snaring is illegal here in the UK. Perhaps you ought to find a better way of keeping him away from the veggies - and it would be a lot more humane.
