What is clipping a wing on a pet bird?

Personally I don't think you should be getting a bird that has flight or even any animal that has a quick reaction time.

Bird regardless of whether they have their wings clipped can still try to fly, can still make sudden movements.

Also personally I believe its extremely cruel to take a bird that biologically to have a healthy productive life is designed to fly, to take that away from a bird when its not happened through injury or deformity is downright playing hitler.

Clipping does not always work, it works for long flight but a lot of birds with clipped wings can still fly a couple of feet.

And yes you are correct, an animal that has evolved to fly is now subjected to waddling around. They can get a whole range of problems because of it, they are not made to stay in that position for very long.

There are no nerves in the feathers, they are a little like our hair and nails. But the very root of the feather is inside of the skin and will bleed if pulled out rather than pushed out naturally from new growth.

There are different kinds of ways to clip a birds wings depending on the type of bird and who is clipping them.

Most people will not permanently remove the birds flight feathers but will cut a neat line to just take over half of the feathers away. They can still move from predators but cannot fly long distances or go very high.

Removing flight feathers will last roughly a year but could be less or longer depending on the species.

I'm sure if you asked somebody working at the store would clip their wings if not already clipped.

As somebody who has owned all different kinds of birds I do not recommend clipping a Parakeets wings. They are not a ground bird. Something like a chicken I would say sure, clip them if you had no natural predators and safe enclosure but a parakeet can and probably will become depressed if you take all of its natural behaviors away from it.

Parakeets in my opinion should have full range of the house for a few hours a day, an entire room or large aviary big enough for them to get enough exercise. Always keep them in couples.

Anybody who keeps them in those tiny cages and hardly lets them out must not have an ounce of empathy and I wish karma on them.

cliping wings mean that they cut the flight feathers so they can't fly. They'll grow back about every month. they parakeets petco sells are very young. Please buy a book about them before you go and get one so you know how to care for it. Thats the best thing you could do before buying a bird.

I am thinking about getting a pet Parakeet but my house doesn't really have a lot of space to fly, and I am kind of scared of sudden flying movements and things like that. I have heard a lot of videos mentioning "Clipping wings" What is that? Does it hurt the bird? will it never fly again? And how does it move around without wings? Does it just walk and jump around or does it glide or something? And do pet stores sell parakeets that have been Clipped already? And do the clipped wings grow back at some point, if so, who will do it? Do i have to do it or can i take it to the vet or pet store to?

Thanks alot if you answer
