Budgerigars & Parakeets need a varied diet, almost the same as human requirements, although they are better "vegetarians" than most humans and need zero "meat". However, like most birds, they may eat unfertilized eggs and eggshells, to boost their protein levels and to stock up on the minerals needed for their own egg-shell production, especially if producing young.
A good way to "kill" a budgie (or a human) is to feed it only on seeds, which are rich in energy-storing omega-6 fatty acids.
You will never have to *force* a parakeet to eat green leafy veges or orange-colored fruits & veg, such as pumpkin, carrots, melon,etc. They will also enjoy cabbage leaves or spinach or any other leafy greens.

No, you should not buy parakeet food, buy either cockatiel or lovebird food. also you should feed them fruits and veggies as often as you can. however some fruits and veggies are very bad for birds, for example avocado. some safe fruits and veg would be strawberries, raspberries, cantaloupe, honey dew melon, carrots, and broccoli. you should also buy a cuttle bone and a mineral block for them to chew on. another thing they like is some whole wheat bread with a little bit of peanut butter on it, but only feed a small piece of bread, probably once a week max. also they like millet, but it is quite fattening so you should also feed them one millet spray just once a week. :) I own 5 birds, 3 of which are parrotlets and one is a parakeet, and they are all very happy and healthy! good luck! (also don't listen to whoever said just sunflower seeds, they love sunflower seeds but they shouldn't just be eating sunflower seeds, the cockatiel mix should come with a healthy amount of sunflower seeds)
In my area, there are a few hundreds of wild parakeet flying in the sky and I know parakeets love my almond tree. They eat the whole fruit, skin and nut, and make my almond tree bare this year. In general parrots like fruits and veggie but my neighbor's son has a cockatiel and he even eat tofu
