What do grasshoppers eat?

Grasshoppers are considered herbivores and eat cotton, oats, clover, wheat and alfalfa. Certain long-horned grasshoppers feed on insects and occasionally dead animals. They also eat leaves, stems and flowers.

Identifying features of grasshoppers include brown markings and a herringbone pattern on their hind femurs. Grasshoppers have two sets of wings and segmented antennae. Grasshoppers often regurgitate a bitter brown liquid as a defense mechanism when they are being handled. Grasshoppers tend to thrive in grassy fields, as they can easily camouflage themselves against the grass and leaves. Grasshoppers play a significant role in the ecosystem and their droppings work to fertilize plants. However, when grasshoppers multiply in large numbers, they can wreak havoc on crops and pastures.

One interesting fact about grasshoppers is that they do not have noses. They breathe out of holes that are located on the sides of their bodies. Large grasshoppers are very strong and can jump distances of 20 times the length of their bodies. Grasshoppers have several enemies in nature that include rodents, birds, beetles and spiders. Similar to crickets, grasshoppers are known for their chirping. Male grasshoppers chirp in order to attract female grasshoppers as well as keep male grasshoppers at a safe distance.

Soft plants I think I made a herb garden on my balcony and I found it attracted them. So they flew up all the way to the balcony for it. But I noticed another hopper once I put him on my hand he just started chewing my flesh like he wasnt going to stop so yeah some appear to be carnivores.
