What are the scientific classification of domestic dog?

For years the domestic dog was classified as a species, Canis familiaris. However, recent DNA analysis shows domestic dogs evolved from wolves, Canis lupus. This led scientists to reclassify the domestic dog as Canis lupus familiaris, a subspecies of the wolf rather than a separate species

Domain- Eukarya

Kingdom- Animalia

Phylum- Chordata

Subphylum- Vertebrata

Class- Mammalia

Order- Carnivora

Family- Canidae

Genus- Canis

Species- Canis lupus

Subspecies- Canis lupus familiaris

There is debate in the scientific community about whether dogs are a species in their own right or a subspecies of grey wolf. Those who believe it is a species of its own classify it as Canis familiaris. Those who believe it is a wolf classify it as Canis lupus familiaris.

It's worth mentioning that dogs and wolves are not genetically identical and have many physical and behavioural differences. Just because dogs evolved from wolves does not mean they ARE wolves, any more than pigs are wild boar or cattle are aurochs. Remember, if you classify dogs as Canis lupus familiaris, you are saying they are wolves - you're saying a poodle, a dachshund, a pug and so on are the EXACT SAME SPECIES as a pack-hunting canid preying on moose in the wilds of Eurasia and North America.

If you consider dogs to be a subspecies of wolf then Canis lupus familiaris

If you consider them to be a separate species then Canis familiaris

They are Animals; Mammals, from the carnivora order, and the Dog family Canidae.
