Bats can carry rabies. There have been fatalities from bats that bit people, who had no idea they could contract rabies from these bites and sought medical attention too late. Most bats feed on insects, so they need places where there are lots of them, and they are active at night mostly. One good place to watch bats is the Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico. You can see thousands of them come out from the cave in the late afternoon. Before the bats come out, you can see all the weird and wonderful stalactites formations within the cave.
Bats are found over most of the United States, but they tend to be more common in the southern states. They are rarely seen by most people because they are active only at night and they roost in dark places during the day.
Generally most bat species are endangered and protected therfore it is illgal to even disturb a bat roost never mind take one and keep it, even if they weren't they are wild animals so inappropriate to have as a pet. If your son is interested in more unusual pets as oppossed to cats or dogs you could look at getting him a rat/snake/lizard/spider etc. But before you get an exotic type pet make sure you spend time researching how to look after them as many need very special care
It is illegal to have a bat as a pet, and you would not be able to care for it anyway and it would die. Buy him a bat box, and a bat field guide for his birthday or take him to a known bat roost in your area to watch the bats emerge at night.
If your son wants a bat just go to a place that sells sporting goods.
Not a good idea.
What you could do is find plans for a bat roost.... it's a vertical structure that attracts bats to roost there during the day.
Or, if you have some money, get him a bat sound detector. Bats have most of their sound in the frequencies above human hearing. There are electronic detectors that take those sounds and translate them into sounds we can hear.
