Thinking of getting a parakeet?

Posted at: 2014-11-15
Hi, I have two male parakeets and I love them! Getting them was the best decision i have ever made.

To answer your questions :

1. By common, do you mean where can you get them? Your local pet store should have them. I got both of mine at petco. wide selection.

2. For me, i just keep them in my room. I have cats who will try at any chance to get to them. I close my door and just let them walk around as they please. Their wings are clipped, they can't fly :/

3. I have read from 7-10 years, but i am not sure.

4. If they fly into things, then that's it. My birds have taken hits on walls and shelves, and they are always fine afterwards. They will learn.

5. You will need to look at how much cages and toys cost in your area. Food depends also.

6. I just buy normal parakeet food at the store. Sometimes i buy treat sticks (mine love them!) make sure you use BOTTLED water, not tap. Change as needed.

7. Just keep your area clean and let them adapt before you hold them and stuff:)

Linnies are beautiful birds!

Don't forget to offer your bird greens. Ours love broccoli and like to 'bathe' in wet romaine lettuce. (Iceberg is too watery)

So, for a while I've been interested in getting a bird, I've narrowed it down to a cobalt blue lineolated parakeet. I've got a few questions first though.

1. How common are these types of birds?

2. I know most birds need at least an hour of being handled, and at least 2+ hours of "free time" around the house, what are some good ways of "bird proofing" your house?

3. How long on average do these birds live?

4. Is it best to cover your window and mirrors at first and slowly teach your bird they cannot fly through them? if so, how? Or is it best to always have them covered?

5. What is the average cost for the upkeep of a bird?

6. Best diet for these types of birds?

7. Anything else I should know?
