A.Well first off, you will need a nesting box. You can buy one of these at the pet store, such as Petco, for $8. (note: I like to use a finch nesting box while the hen is on her eggs. Once the babies hatch and are growing, I use a parakeet nesting box. The difference is that a finch nesting is very small while the parakeet nesting box is very large with lots of space.) Also you can buy a box of nesting hairs and cotton to fill the nesting box.
Q. Is it easy to breed parakeets?
A.Personally I think it is fairly easy to breed parakeets. The parents usually will do all the work of caring for the babies while you have to keep a clean and safe environment for them to live in. The only time it does get difficult is when the mom stops taking care of the babies and you have to begin hand feeding.
Q. Will parakeets mate with any bird or are they picky (will they ever be attracted to each other)?
A. Not all male and female parakeets will get along with each other. But given some time, they usually will.
Q. How to tell sex of yellow and white birds?
A.Yellow (lutino) males will usually have a pink/light purple cere. Female will usually have white color around their nose and the rest will be white with blue. The same goes for white.
Q. How to get them in breeding condition?
A. Again, put the nesting box at the bottom of the cage. You can’t make them but it does help to get the cage ready. Make sure to include nesting hairs and cotton (both can be purchased at the pet-store). It will take time for the female to get comfortable with the nesting box, but give it some time she should be spending plenty of time inside making the box ready for babies. When the female starts spending more than 80% of their time inside the box and her droppings are very large, I would start to expect eggs soon.
Q. How to know they are going to mate?
A. You can never tell when they are going to mate because it all depends on how well the two will cooperate. When they are cleaning and preening each other and are talking and kissing each other, means they are showing deep affection for each other.
Q. Signs of ready to breed?
A.Signs include: Female droppings will begin to increase in size (note: They will become EXTREMELY big! and very messy! So be prepared to clean up!) Another sign is that the female will spend time near the ground hunting and pecking (trying to make a nest) If you start seeing any of this they it is recommended to put the nesting box in. Also the he hen should lay eggs every other day. Incubation Time (how long the female will sit on the eggs) is about 18 days. If the eggs are fertile the eggs will hatch every other day. Fledgling Age is about 30 day
Q. How big does the cage have to be?
A. I would keep the same cage and remove (if any) the cage grate. (note: you don't have to do this but it can help prevent injuries) Keep the male in the same cage as the female because the male helps the female by feeding her and at times will keep her company and at times will feed the babies when they are older.
Q. Is female picky of where nest box is?
A. For the first time, not necessarily. I would keep it at the bottom of the cage though. Having it at the bottom makes it easier for the female to access. And if a baby chick falls out, it won’t take a hard hit.
Q. Any other tip you can give me as a starter?
A. I would suggest to a starter to be prepared for deaths. Not all the babies are going to make it to adulthood. Also, just because the two mate doesn't mean that they will have fertile eggs. Also be VERY careful with the eggs! Try not to handle them to much. That also goes for the babies. Its best to check the nest only when the female leaves.
