Should I get my birds wings clipped?

At first I had my ringneck dove clipped. It wasn't tamed and had lived most of its life in a pet shop. At the time I had thought clipping was a good thing for untamed and untrained birds. The fact is, any status a scared bird will try to fly away. If it can't it will bite or wing slap. If an owner does not have the ability or knowledge of how to handle a biting bird, the bird will learn to bite. You can recapture a bird that flew away from you and calm it down much easier than you can teach a bird not to bite. Either way the precautions and taming process is about the same.

I know that my ringneck dove is much happier now that he has the ability to fly and is bonding to us quite well.

Such Bad Information above. People like to dominate their poor birds. Yet claim they love them. How sad is that? Clipping is cruel. If they want a non flighted bird why did they get a bird.

Any clipping should be only as a last resort after all else has failed or for some other good solid reason. It has no place as a training tool.

As for preference I guess this would not be the birds choice.

A lovebird with a full primary clip is still likely able to fly if it is fit healthy and was allowed to fully fledge.

i also know where clipping an older bird has back fired on the owner. Great I love those stories.

A bird needs to be able to fly around to get a full cardiovascular workout for good health.

Clipped birds are more likely to get hurt trying to fly and crashing. A bird that is comfortable and at ease will work things out and be able to think on the wing to avoid objects and windows.

Read up on Positive Reinforcement Training and go with this. It is based on love, kindness and bonding with your bird..

Tall claim that one Kaylee! But not true what you are trying to defend.

There is 'NO Way' it is healthy for them! It is a shame you can come here and post such misleading comments.

And think about your own comments about them getting angry about having their flight taken away from them. a bird is food, so the first thing it will try to do if it sees ant threat is to fly away. They do not think about standing and fighting, so they freak out because they cannot escape.

It is time you up skilled.

I have 34 birds but my house pet bird I always clip his wings as he has got out before and its safer. Clipping there wings is not bad for them and is safer. I clip all my birds wings. If u get it done dont be near the bird ir incision as it can make the vird angry that U let them do it. Get someone else or ur local vet to do it. I think that its healty for the bird to get its wings clipped. Good Luck ur bird will always love u

It's a matter of preference. As well as if the bird is already tame or not. A bird that is not yet tame, and not handfed or bonded to humans, will be easier to work with if it's wings are clipped.

It's easy to clip them yourself, you only clip the primary feathers, and you can find many charts online to show you exactly where to cut, it doesnt hurt the bird but they do NOT like it!

Also it can help the bird to not injure itself flying around the house, and prevent accidental escapes out the door.

I clip my birds wings, you only have to do it two or three times a year.

If you want to train your birds best to clip his wings,,,other wise if he gets out and you don`t train him he could get serious hurt ,,birds fly fast and its most of the time head first into a window or a wall...good luck

I have a peach faced lovebird and I don't know if I should get her wings clipped! I have read that you should get them clipped but I have been told not to get them clipped. I'm so confused!! Just let me know if I should or shouldn't. Thanks for all your help!
