Raising Chickens without heat lamp?

1. Back then, the chicks had mothers to warm them up.

2. There is a high possibility that your chicks will die, especially if you keep them outside. If there is no possible way you can get a heat lamp, I suggest keeping them in the warmest room in your house, with plenty of bedding. Also, keep the room darker. :)

Good luck with your chicks

I am planning to raise some chicks 1 week old in my suburban backyard. Do I have to use a heat lamp for the first few weeks or will they survive?? I made a improvised coop with straw bedding.

Also, I live in the Sydney region, Australia.

Would the nights be too cold for the chicks to cope? I can raise them in summer if it is. I can also raise them in a cardboard box inside the house for the first few weeks.

Also, back in the olden days we didn't have any artificial light and the chicks survived fairly well. So do I need a heat lamp???

Update : I can raise them in the summer when the night temperature is >25C

Will that be sufficient?
