As the physicists have noted, a creature of that size would be unable to breath or regulate it's temperature. They would also need to eat large amounts of food to sustain their metabolism.
However, they underestimate the maximum size an arthropod can reach. The largest "spider" is the Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula, Theraphosa blondi. By repeatedly molting it's exoskeleton this tarantula can reach sizes of a foot across.
The largest arthropod in the world is the Coconut crab, which can reach sizes of three feet from one leg to another. As far as we know, that should be the upper limit to creatures of this type. Then again, it's a weird and wonderful world out there, and scientists make a career out of one-upping themselves.
