which is a cedar box
Redwood - doesn't rot, indigenous to the locale so the owls are used to it, looks good. What's not to like?
Edit: Redwood is expensive but owls do not have a sense of smell so rock on with the cedar!

Try using cypress. It's tough.
Have a client wanting me to build a nesting-house for screech-owls here on the Oregon Coast.
I was wondering if building the box out of cedar is the best or will the smell drive them away. I build a lot of bird-boxes,90% cedar but never one for owls and all the on-line info I've read just says unpainted white pine and that wood falls apart too easily here due to the weather.
So, who's the bird-brain with the correct answer?
Thanks!
