No, you do not know that. You might assume that, but that's how people get in trouble. Start with what you actually know, and then think about why you think you know it. You may find that a lot of what you "know" is actually just stuff you assume to be true. Now, you can turn that into an hypothesis if you want. Hypothesis: "our ancestors were basically losers forced out of the forest by stronger monkey-human relatives". So, how would you test this hypothesis? If you can figure out a way to test it, great; if you can't figure out a way to test it, then it's a worthless hypothesis.
Well... Are you interested in this evidence and logic being based on science? If so, you will need a lot of creative writing because there is NO evidence that our ancestors were "basically losers".
I don't understand why you think we were forced out of forests. Some of the earliest bipedal fossils, dating back about 4.4 million years, “were… laid down in a fairly densely wooded environment” (Ian Tattersall, "The Fossil Trail). The range of early bipeds did not constrict, which we would see if they were denied habitat, but spread with successive species, shrinking as the species reached extinction. That expansion is about as good an indicator of biological success as any.
I'd like to help, but it is difficult to forget logic. Fact is that over the recent 20,000 years, as a species we've so far been enormously successful.
I guess this is the clinch that might help you ... "so far".
Alternatively, our early hominin ancestors might be considered "losers", as climate change removed their forest environment. They lost that, but it's hard to see them as losers, as they were the lineage that adapted to the new environment - they succeeded. At least so far.
