How much would it be to start a farm?

There are 2 good ways to save money. You can start a savings account now, some of them even build interest over time. You can also purchase a CD, which is a certificate of deposit, it is a time deposit- basically you buy it now and do not have access to it for several years, but when that time is up, you have a lot of money.

The first thing you need to consider is land. You have to buy a large plot- VERY large. You are going to want several acres of Ranch land (farms generally grow plants for food, a ranch has animals for meat.) You can go online and check out the prices of land, like if you try Zillow.com, enter Dallas TX then under home type uncheck every box except for lots/land.

In addition to the purchase price of each animal, you have to factor in the cost of supplies (pens, fencing, tack) and food.

If you are lucky enough to find a large plot of ranch land with a house already on it you are set, but those are going to be a few hundred thousand dollars.

Make a list, say you want 2 horses, 5 cows, 3 pigs, 12 chickens, and 6 sheep. Next, do a quick google search on how much it costs to feed a horse for 1 week, multiply that by 2 and write it on the list next to horse. Do the same process for each animal and then at the end, add up the total.

You can go on craigslist under the farm and garden section and find the prices of different animals for sale to give you an idea of the minimum price you might have to pay to buy each animal you want.

This is also not taking into consideration house utilities, (electric bill, water bill, tax.) and if it is meat for your own personal use and not for sale (you are not going into the business of raising livestock for food and selling it on the market) you have to pay taxes on your ranch land as well as your house.

It is good you are planning now because this dream is going to take a lot of hard work to make come true. I strongly suggest starting with a savings account, you are old enough to start babysitting so try to get as many babysitting jobs as you can and put money into savings, then when you turn 16 you can get a job and put even more cash into your account.

Also, are you going to get your degree in companion animal veterinary medicine (dogs & cats) or livestock veterinary medicine (cows, horses, sheep)? They are different schools. If you are going to be a companion animal vet you need to also factor in the cost of veterinary care for your animals and a farrier to shoe your horses (who also need shots, deworming, and regular teeth inspections).

More than ten acres is likely too costly and will be too much work, unless you have partners and/or employees. Typically you can buy the farm and house cheap (but it needs a lot of repairs) from some one else with a similar dream gone sour. Watch the ancient TV series, Green Acres = not far from reality.

A LOT OF MONEY.

Okay. I'm 13. About to turn 14. And I've always have had this huge dream of becoming a veterinarian. I love all animals. Big, small, soft. I can't stand scaly animals. Unless it is a croc. I live in la. And i plan on graduating from USC college in 2027. Lol. Ik I have a long way ahead of me but it's never too early to plan your future. Anyways. When I do graduate and get my ph.D in veterinarian work I want to move out of la and go to Dallas Texas where I use to live. I want a big farm. With horses, cows, pigs, chickens, lambs, sheep. And a place where I can have my dogs lay and raise there puppies at. I want a trail where I can run my horses. I want a grassy field with a gated area so that my horses can roam freely so they don't feel trapped. I also would probably want buffalo. Oh of course I need a nice house out there close by the farm. And I would need a farm a ranch whatever is called. I also would need a Butcher shop to cut up the meat. I know I have a lot that I want. It would also be helpful if you could tell me how I can start saving up money. .. Thanks for helping.
