How have gumtrees adapted to the Australian Environment?

How do they fit into the food chain?

- Behavioural.

- Physiological.

They were probably to a large extent already adapted to arid nutrient deficient soils and as Australia dried out and the soils became poorer it favoured gumtrees. So Australia adapted to the gum tree.

I heard this on ABC radio several years ago so i can't give you a reference.
