if he doesnt mind you hand feeding it then you can use that. try giving him a treat,like something you don't usually feed him like peanuts from your hand and while he is eating it,try petting him gently on the side,if he likes the treat than he wont mind. try training it,for example,if you want it to get up on your hand without food try making an action that will sort of tell it that it has to come on your hand,like putting your hand near its feet,but he has to feel comfortable with this action and also get used to it. also you should show the bird that it can really trust you,then it will listen to what you want it to do.

I've had a young male budgie for about 3 weeks now. I've been trying to train it, but nothing seems to work. It is used to me and doesn't mind me hand feeding it or touching it, but I cannot get it to willingly step on my hand without food. Also if I try to pet it from the side it will scurry away. I tried pressing on its chest with my finger but it won't step up.

I've read about people having trouble getting their budgie out of their cage, but mine seems to WANT to get out. It's gotten out twice before and we had trouble getting it back in.

Anyone have any tips as of how to get him to like me or be more tame? I've tried hard now and it hasn't changed since I got him.
