So, I work in a pet store. I began working here because I love animals and instead of selling them to whoever wants them, I made a promise to myself that I'd make sure that people wouldn't buy them on a whim.
When I first got there, the animals, including the hamsters, would flinch every time I touched them. It's been a month and I'm starting to see a change in the way the animals are reacting to me, so I'm happy with that process. Anywho, I'm a mammal/reptile person, meaning fish and birds are pretty much a mystery to me. No one deals with the birds because they're super flighty and nervous and it's just a hassle.
There is a beautiful cockatiel that we've had in there for about 5 months. Right now, he (or she) is all alone and shivers in a corner all day. Ever since I saw him, I decided I would change that. I've researched cockatiels, but I think my situation is unique. Most people work with them from home so they get used to their owner. Is it even possible to tame him while he's still in the store? What do I do? I've been wheeling his cage every day for the past two days into the back room and simply opening the door. I haven't reached my hand inside or even made any sudden movements. Even opening his door is terrifying for him. He screeches like I'm killing him. It's just heart breaking and I don't want him going to a family in this state. Anything would help. And like I said, experts only. You're not an expert if you have like a year's experience of owning a bird.
