If he did not come back then something bad has happened to him...
I know that a pigeon would never leave his nest, only to find some food or just get some... what we call: 'fresh air'.
There are many possible things that have happened to him...
He got caught and eaten by a cat.
He hurt one of his wings and couldn't fly.
He found a pigeon coop (which is a person's property) and decided to eat from the food available there.
And in some countries, people hunt birds just for fun, so he maybe got shot down by a person.
So yeah.... Something bad has happened to your pigeon and hopefully he will return back soon.
