Counting? I would put a button and the number 1 next to each other and encourage him to peck at the number 1 by offering a treat there between your fingers. As he pecks the 1 give the treat saying good bird one. Now add a button and place a number 2 next to the number 1. Again encourage with a treat, this time touching the first button then the second button move to the number 2 and give the treat (with good bird two) when he pecks the number 2. As he gets the idea of this game add a three and so on. Mix up the times you leave the number of buttons but leave the numbers as they were, like you will have the three numbers but just 1 button. Go with the treat to the button/buttons and then to the answer and so on adding more numbers as he gets them right. He may only play a short time so don't try to force the playing.
