Getting African Grey?

Posted at: 2014-11-15
I don't agree whatsoever with a 14 year old having a cag . Tbh , Im 14 & my dad Bought me a cockatoo , African grey , Double yellow headed amazon & aN eclectus .

Parrots are fragile & don't have to good of an immune system , So Be sure to look up the dos & donts of what to feed them , Always make sure they have at least 3-4 different kinds of perches . Wooden ones w/ the sandpaper isn't very good . Make sure theyre all around the same size , Also every perch should have a toy plus one extra . Make sure the Cage is big & the bars are an appropriate length apart . Parrots can have seeds as SOMETIME treats . They need pellets & fruits & veggies . They also need baths & you cant use hairspray or perfume or air freshners around them . & candles are prohibited unless they are 100% soy . African greys are testy & not a first time bird . go for a baby if its a first time bird & you HAVE to have a grey .

I am not going to lie to you an African Grey is way too much of a responsibility for a 14 year old.I am thirteen years old so there is not much of an age difference.I am going to tell you the truth if you want a parrot start with something small, easy to handle and most importantly something that won't bite all the way to the bone if it gets agitated.I would recommend something like a hand fed cockatiel, budgie,or a lovebird.Grey's are prone to problems like feather plucking and other health issues. They also produce a white dander that get everywhere.I can't feed or play with my own birds without having a sneezing fit at least once that's why they are kept in an outdoor aviary. If you are allergic to dander then I recommend you get something like a conure or a caique. Also,do you have the space for a cage that has an area of at least nine feet in your home?Especially your living room because birds love to be with the family so they must be in a high traffic area in the house. If you do not have the space in your home then you and your dad will have to build a large aviary made out of stainless steel mesh(the thick expensive kind). All I am trying to say is think of your future and the birds future if think that was way too much maybe you should think of a smaller bird to adopt. Now to answer your questions.Q1:They have a natural diet consisting of seeds, nuts and fruit that are found in the Congo Grey's natural habitat but they have a captive diet consisting mostly of parrot pellets, seeds, vegetables and fruit.Q2:The bird will probably take a while to get use to a new family and will probably prefer to not be around a lot of people for the first couple of weeks but after a while you can invite friends and family over to meet him/her.Q3:No,you have to take your parrot to a vet who specializes in exotics and parrot and not the standard dog and cat vet.I wish you luck with what ever bird you choose to get and I hope you don't get bitten often. .P.S. Please adopt from a rescue or buy from a reputable breeder and not buy from a pet store . .P.P.S.Keep a spray bottle full of water on hand...you will need it. .P.P.P.S. Do not get an amazon of any kind they are very hormonal, loud, and aggressive once they reach sexual maturity.

they like seeds sun flowers seeds nuts and fruits gray parrot is good bread but i would like double yellow headed amazon , yellow nape amazon more then grey parrot :)

I don't know about african greys but my only tip is make sure your get a bird that was hand raised by humans since hatching. Otherwise they are hard to train and scared of you.

Whats up yahoo so a few days ago I asked my dad if I could get a parrot and he said yeah why not but he will be my responsibility. He said he would get me an african grey which I thought was awesome. The CAG will be under 3 and my questions were what do they eat? How much do I have to socialize with him or her? Do they go to a normal vet? Im 14 and im planning to make this bird a life long friend. Any tips would be great
