Macaws are a extremely large commitment and if you are ready then all I have to say is go for it
I totally agree with Victoria on this one. Another thing is I would not recommend a macaw. They are extremely loud when left in their cage. Macaws prefer being out... all day long.. similar to how long you would let a ferret out. I would totally recommend maybe a ringneck, African grey, or some smaller easy to handle parrot. Macaw I would hold off for maybe 16th birthday. It will give you plenty of time to study or you could just stick with a intermediate level bird such as the ones listed above. I wish you the very best of luck.
Macaw is a large commitment, but i think you're ready to own a macaw. You should also be ready carewise (vet, cage, food etc..) vet bills can be pretty expensive for macaws but since you already have 5 other bird i'm assuming you're aware of this and would have an agreement with your parents about this. I think you'd be a great pet owner. However, it is easy to begin slacking on exact timing, so don't expect to always fit in 5 hours for a macaw. Make sure you are 100% dedicated to the cost, commitment and dedication of owning a macaw. All serious stuff aside, good luck! I hope you figure something out, and I hope i helped!
By the way, make sure you are not getting a macaw simply so you can have a "challenge" none of your birds are quite the same as owning such a large time consuming bird, so not only will a macaw be a challenge, but it was be a very large part of your life that you need to be willing to dedicate several years of your life to. If you are not sure there could be places you could volunteer (bird stores, bird breeders) so you could get a feel of what it's like to own a macaw. Otherwise, i wish you good luck! (:
Hi, I am a 13 year old. I have been researching birds for 2 years. I have experience as I own 4 budgies, 1 cockatiel, and 1 green cheek conure. I want more of a challenge, so I am interested in getting a a macaw. Do you think my schedule would work for the macaw? So for 1 hour in the morning while I eat and get ready for school I will have the macaw out with me as a member of the flock. Then, I will have to go to school and be back around 2 or 3. Then, I'll play with him for for 1 hour. Then, I'll have him on a play stand while I finish my homework and since my parents expect the best in education (me having a 98+ GPA always and being valedictorian is why they even agreed to get a macaw) I'll need to give another 2 hours to extra studies. So I'll be done with studies around 8. So that gives me till like 10 and 11 to play with the macaw. That's about 5 hours per day. So is that schedule good for a macaw? Also, I have a brother who's 9. If he finishes his studies before me he will also interact with the macaw. Furthermore, on the weekends I will play with the macaw the whole day and take him on walks with an avian leash. I have discussed this with my parents so I have their agreement to do this. Many of you might say what abut the bird when I go to college. I plan on going to Colombia college which is in NYC and I live in NYC and as you've seen my studies are pretty strong so I'll probably go there. I know this a serious commitment and I'm ready. Thanks for your time.
