It probably sees us as another ape, larger and threatening to it's territory etc.
I heard somewhere that the Gorilla is 98% human - phew that close - that explains the knuckles dragging on the ground etc. But one silverback has even gone one step closer to us by walking tall just like a human.

And just in case you was wondering, yes, we are living on the planet of the apes and for the time being it's us Human apes who are boss apes, but for how much longer?
Note: apes are not designed for running no matter what people think. Instead we are designed for climbing here's how it's done.
They do not even know that species are...
But no, they would not mistake a human for a conspecific.
"Species" is an entirely artificial, human concept. Most humans need to have it explained multiple times. So no, chimps have no understanding of what a "species" is.
You'll have to ask a chimp. But most animals have an instinct to go for the most vulnerable part(s) of their prey.
They know. That is probably their style of fighting.
I've noticed that in most chimpanzee attacks on humans they will go for the same tactics as when fighting other chimps. For example, trying to remove the fingers and genitals of the enemy. Why is this? Do chimps view humans as similar to them in that case?
