Deer mouse in closet, behind one box. Still there. Help?

What is the likelihood of the mouse carrying a disease? I know that it probably does, but I handle mice all the time, so I want to know how safe/unsafe he/she is.

Deer mice are carriers of Hantavirus, but I do not know whether this is present in your area. Hantavirus in humans generally comes from an airborne source, such as sweeping or digging where the mice have been urinating.

Other than that, unless you have heard of any rodent disease outbreak in your area, it is probably fine.

Deer mice are very pretty.

I think you will be fine if you wash your hands. There is little chance the mouse has diseases you can catch. What worries me is that you handle mice all the time--the wild mouse may have mouse diseases you don't want to pass on to the mice at work, the petstore, or wherever you are handling mice.
