Can non-human animals enjoy music?

Yes, they can. There have been studies that clearly show milk cows give more milk when they hear soothing music. Many farmers now have stereo systems installed in their barns to accomodate the cows.

There has never been a blind study that has successfully proved that animals respond directly to music (Other than those with noises that mimic distress, prey, or mating calls). Most people interpret their pet's response to them (while listening to music) as a direct response to music. Not so. They are responding directly to their human companions.

If animals did, predators would use music to their advantage to capture prey, just as human (economic) predators do by playing music in commercials and malls. You don't see that in the animal world.

Almost all animals respond positively to good music. It evokes calm, interest, and enjoyment in mammals of every kind. Whales sing to one another, shepherds gather their flocks with flutes, pets will listen and even dance.

Also interesting is that plants react to music by attempting to grow towards music. One vineyard owner in france discovered that he could increase his yield AND control the direction vines were growing through the placement of CD stereos.

They certainly seem to. Its already used to increase the productivity of farmed animals but it may depend on the musical tastes of the particular breeds. Perhaps ein en clinen clucking music for chickens, or Bolerio for milking cows, pops for pigs, or a bit of water music on the fish farm?

Perhaps The 1812 is best avoided though.

They can but it's against the law. I have heard of some people that get stoned and play music for dogs but it's illegal to do that.

Yes of couse my dogs love music.

Classical music relaxes my little dogs.

I play acoustic guitar. One of our two cats(brothers) almost always lies at my feet while I'm playing (MUCH more so than he would ordinarily do).
