Every night we change the papers in our birds cages. We also have newspaper on the carpet that is changed nightly. Once a month - even in winter - we disassemble each cage and all the bird toys and the cages are washed in hot water and bleach. In the summer - the cages are taken outside and pressure washed.
Most people who walk though our front door - they 'see' the 5 parrots we own - and they always mentioned how they do not 'smell' them. And ask what our secret is. We just keep things clean.
If you have fear of harming your lungs just keep everything clean . Wipe down your cage weekly or whenever there is a mess. Do not let poop pile up for more than a couple days. If you put several layers of papers in bottom of cage and remove the top one daily you will have a clean cage and no odors. Bird fancier lungs is caused by dust caused by dried up poop. It is caused by prolonged exposure, not just casual exposure. So just keep the cage clean and you will have no problems. If you change the papers often---all will be well. I have had as many as 9 parrots at once for many, many, years and have had no problems. Keep it clean .
I have 2 pet budgies and I put their cage in my bedroom on the other side of the romm opposing my bed. I was searching about budgie in the internet and I heard about bird fancier lungs. I feel scare hearing about that.
You people who have pet birds what do you do to avoid that illness?
