It was a so-called "flesh fly" in the family Sarcophagidae. The adult female doesn't deposit eggs, she deposits larvae that hatched from eggs she retained inside her body.

It was a big fly (about the size of a quarter) with a green head and green stripes down its back with red eyes. When I killed it, little tiny worms or maggots or larvae came squirming out. What fly was this and can the little worms survive outside the body? Can it hurt me?
